Robert (“Bob”) Frager began training in Judo in 1957. He was a personal student of Hal Sharp Sensei, who had been the senior foreign student at the Kodokan. Frager continued his Judo training through 1963, until he was introduced to Aikido by a friend. He was a Fellow at the East-West Center in Hawaii at that time, and he began his Aikido training at the Aikido Hombu Dojo in Honolulu.
Six months later Frager traveled to Japan to continue his study of Japanese language, culture and social behavior. He trained at Aikido International Headquarters in Tokyo from June 1964 to July 1966 under the direction of the Founder. He returned to
Tokyo in 1967 and resumed daily training for six more months. In 1974 Frager brought a group of his Aikido students to Japan for 6 months of intensive Aikido training in Shingu with Michio Hikitsuchi and other Shingu dojo Shihan. From 1995 to 2012 he was a personal student of Hiroshi Kato Shihan, 8th dan, and served as host, translator and guide for Kato Shihan on his twice-yearly visits to California.
During his first trip to Japan in 1964, while Frager was enrolled as a foreign student at Keio University, he carried out his doctoral dissertation research on Japanese social behavior. Frager went back to the United States in June, 1966. He returned to Harvard University as a Harvard Teaching Fellow and he received his Ph.D. in psychology from Harvard University in June,1967. In July Frager returned to Keio as a post-doctoral research fellow and resumed daily Aikido training at Hombu Dojo.
He has published articles on his social psychology research in Japan in both Japanese and English. He has also published over half a dozen articles and book chapters on Aikido and presented lectures and classes on Aikido in America, Europe, the USSR, Turkey and Indonesia.
